            Cartoons often have fan clubs in which members write extensions or additions to the series. Imagine Yosemite Sam falling off a cliff into a raging river, then something unusual happens.

            Instead of rewriting a cartoon, think fairy tale. Think Cinderella as the hero of her own story, rescuing Prince Charming. Little Red Robin defeats the Wolf on the walk to

Grandma’s house. The boy walks past the hole in the dike, but his sister stays behind to save the town.

            Your task is to write a story based upon a fairy tale. Switch things up just enough that your version is completely original.

Imagine Cinderella on Mars or Pinocchio as robot. How would their stories change? What experiences might they have that differ from the original versions of their stories?

Would Cinderella still be human and Pinocchio a puppet? What other options are there that would make for an interesting story? Perhaps Cinderella is the Good Witch instead of the beneficiary of the Good Witch’s spell? What if Pinocchio had wings and special powers?

Your task is to select a fairy tale character and rewrite their story giving them different characteristics, powers, and even appearances.

Rewrite a Known Fairy Tale

Children love hearing fairy tales. The stories take kids to places dark and scary, filled with villains and heroes. Add in an element of magic and the scenes brim with mystery.

Many of the protagonists are male who rescue the maiden from evil forces. However, in modern retellings the roles are often switched. What if it had been Maid Marion who stole from the rich? What changes would there be to the story?

Imagine Prince Charming having lost a boot and Cinderella searches far and wide for the foot that fits. The Prince might have been the one abused by evil cousins while Cinderella lived in a luxurious palace.

Your task is to rethink a fairy tale that you loved as a child. Where will it take place? Who are the characters and what things do they do?

Hang on to enough of the essence of the original story so that your readers will recognize it. Give readers drama through danger and resolution from chance or magic.
